Cluster Merger Variance and the Luminosity Gap Statistic

چکیده
The presence of multiple luminous galaxies in clusters can be explained by the finite time over which a galaxy sinks to the center of the cluster and merges with the the central galaxy. The simplest measurable statistic to quantify the dynamical age of a system of galaxies is the luminosity (magnitude) gap, which is the difference in photometric magnitude between the two most luminous galaxies. We present a simple analytical estimate of the luminosity gap distribution in groups and clusters as a function of dark matter halo mass. The luminosity gap is used to define “fossil” groups; we expect the fraction of fossil systems to exhibit a strong and modelindependent trend with mass: ∼ 1–3% of massive clusters and ∼ 5–40% of groups should be fossil systems. We also show that, on cluster scales, the observed intrinsic scatter in the central galaxy luminosity-halo mass relation can be ascribed to dispersion in the merger histories of satellites within the cluster. We compare our predictions to the luminosity gap distribution in a sample of 730 clusters in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey C4 Catalog and find good agreement. This suggests that theoretical excursion set merger probabilities and the standard theory of dynamical segregation are valid on cluster scales. Evidence for Merger-Driven Activity in the Clustering of High Redshift Quasars
Recently, a very large clustering length has been measured for quasars at a redshift of z ∼ 4. In combination with the observed quasar luminosity function we assess the implications of this clustering for the relationship between quasar luminosity and dark matter halo mass. Our analysis allows for non-linearity and finite scatter in the relation between quasar luminosity and halo mass, as well ...

The galaxy merger and accretion rates, and their evolution with time, provide important tests for models of galaxy formation and evolution. Close pairs of galaxies are the best available means of measuring redshift evolution in these quantities. In this study, we introduce two new pair statistics, which relate close pairs to the merger and accretion rates. We demonstrate the importance of corre...
متن کاملThe Effect of Merger Boosts on the Luminosity, Temperature, and Inferred Mass Functions of Clusters of Galaxies
In the standard Cold Dark Matter model of structure formation, massive clusters form via the merger of smaller clusters. N-body/hydrodynamical simulations of merging galaxy clusters have shown that mergers can temporarily boost the X-ray luminosity and temperature of the merged cluster above the equilibrium values for the merged system. The cumulative effect of these “merger boosts” will affect...
متن کاملDo we expect most AGN to live in discs ? Philip
Recent observations have indicated that a large fraction of the lowto intermediate-luminosity AGN population lives in disc-dominated hosts, while the more luminous quasars live in bulgedominated hosts (that may or may not be major merger remnants), in conflict with some previous model predictions. We therefore build and compare a semi-empirical model for AGN fuelling which accounts for both mer...
